WHITE INFORMATION

Who Is White? Global White Statistics

Why White and Whiteness and not European or such?

The choosing of the label White was done for several purposes. The first is the rejection of the historical use and meaning of Whiteness and reclaiming it for a new positive approach. We believe that words and labels don’t define people, but they have the power to define themselves. That they can change and thus change what they are. The second reason is that White is the term many countries use in their government classifications to label people of European origin. Thus there is pragmatic reasoning. The more people connect to the identity, the more likely they are to understand and engage. The third is that a great deal of negative Whites organizations uses White and Whiteness as their label of thinking, even when they sometimes use European or such as well. To take them head-on, we must meet them in their headspace.

The fourth is that if we said European or such, it would erase the very real different experiences that White Europeans have from Non-White / People of Color Europeans. We are catering to them both and building bridges and thus accuracy is paramount. We don’t use the term Caucasian or such even though many White people are classified or self-identify as such. While it may be used by some as a synonym, the term originally applied to people of the Caucasus and thus loses some accuracy. Also in the general racial discussion, its use is in the small minority in comparison to the term White and would thus run into potential communication pitfalls because of this.

As for country analysis, “White Majority” is how we classify countries. The term White Majority is a usual and acceptable classification by much of the general media to create alignment for dialogue. For the creation of positive culture to identity with, White Majority countries were the ones that were counted. This was chosen as a label as many countries have non-White minorities and thus it would be inaccurate to say a country was a “White/European Nation” or such. Further, “White Majority” was considered satisfactory as typically the countries we associate with “Whiteness” have a White Majority.

The main approach to defining who is White is using a combination of the usual classification, what people self-identity out of respect to their choice of racial identity and combined with government/scientific statistics.

In short for White People: “White is a racialized classification of people and a skin color specifier, generally used for people of European origin”.

This area gets complex for Hispanic/Latin-based identities and Middle East-North African identities. The US Census Bureau for example currently has a listing of “White, Hispanic or Latino” to identify individuals from the Latin/Hispanic/South American worlds. In America, currently 58% of Hispanic Americans self-identity as White in addition to Hispanic. In Hispanic and Latin countries they have the classifications of White for those who are from Europe but some will include The Middle East-North Africa (MENA). Also they have a separate label called “Mestizo” for those with White and Indigenous heritage. For people who are Middle Eastern/North African, circumstances are also special. The US Census Bureau considers Middle Eastern/North African individuals to be White, yet a number of other countries do not. Further, MENA individuals don’t see themselves as White and when presented the option 88% consider themselves Middle Eastern-North African instead of White. Further people who identify as White and Latino don’t see MENA individuals as being White either from a classification perspective. MENA groups are actively working to remove themselves from the White label and create a new label to align with their unique American and global experience. So for this initial approach individuals and populations from the Middle East and Northern Africa will be separately labeled “MENA”.

Also to note, Positive Whiteness/Positive Identity has had some inspiration from the modern racial discussion in America and around the world. By the standards of modern times, the European origin experience is uniquely different than those of Mestizo, Middle-Eastern, North Africa, and Western Asian origins.

Ultimately the standard approach to Whiteness and White people has been people of European origin.

In conclusion for this initial approach, “White People” will mean those of European descent.

Lastly regarding classification. Historically White people have included or excluded other groups from Whiteness for a variety of reasons. One of the negative aspects of Whiteness has been where it was used to figure out who wasn’t White and then exclude and discriminate against people who weren’t classified as White. Positive Whiteness is different. Instead, we do the opposite and we’re taking an inclusionary and empowering tact. People have the power and choice to choose how they identify as. Anyone who ultimately considers themselves White will be then considered to us, as White. Anyone who wants to be White is White.

In the aim to include, MENA and Mestizo Majority countries weren’t part of the counts but were noted considering they can be classified as White in many countries. In the below writeup, you will notice some nations are counted on both sides. This was done because some countries have unique approaches to how they track demographics and classifications. We went into further detail on this hereThis, of course, is a developing science but with Positive Whiteness defining itself on being inclusionary, these double sided countries were counted in the White Majority country totals. Debate and scholarship on this subject will be ongoing.

Here is the list of “White Majority” and MENA/Mestizo countries in the world.  The totals are as follows.

63 White Majority Countries
14 Mestizo Majority Countries
22 MENA Majority Countries

There are 195 countries in the world according to WorldoMeters.info. More information can be found on WorldoMeter here

White Majority countries total 32% of all countries, Mestizo Majority classified countries account for 7% and MENA Majority countries account for 11%.

As for the world percentage of White People, this is part of that developing science. But based on research we find that “White” people account for 16% of the world population with a total of 1.2 billion White people, giving a few percentage points and millions either way, depending on perspective.

In Europe, the total population as of 2022 is 748 million people. People from African, Middle-Eastern, and Asian backgrounds total 21 million but this count isn’t up to date for 2022. With the available data, the European White population number comes out to 728 million.

In North America, the total White population between Canada, the USA and Latin America is 259 million

In South America, the numbers are more complex. However based on the country classification totals, the number they supply comes out to approximately 187 million people.

Counting Australia, Oceana, South Africa, and counting the “White Diaspora” in non-White majority countries, the total amount of “Whites” in the world is a little over 1,200,000,000 a.k.a 1.2 billion. With the world population being 7.7 billion that comes out to approximately 16% of the global population.

Again, this is only how Positive Whiteness perceives them based on how the current approach to define Whiteness. These individuals may identify in other ways and we must respect their identification. Again, any further input and scholarship from any and all people are welcome.

Sources & Approach

In gathering numbers, sources and information, the goal was to be as neutral as possible. However, in a highly charged political environment where many usual sources are considered partisan and biased from one perspective or another, difficult decisions had to be made.

In general, whenever possible sources used were ones that were disconnected from any ideological controversy as much as possible. This significantly narrowed the field of options available but also allowed the approach to be more focused.

Often the individual Indexes and Trackers were directly sourced so the information was brought over in a 1:1 manner. Yet often instead of directly linking to the trackers, the Wikipedia entry instead was directly linked. This was for two reasons.

The Wikipedia entries provide context to the Tracker and Index. Some of these reports have the usual criticisms that any report does so by linking to the entry the reader can have easy access to the criticisms to provide context. If we’re upfront that these Indexes and Reports can have bias, then people who participate in Positive Whiteness will be more confident that we’re being thoughtful and attentive to our constructive work. Wikipedia is not considered a reliable source for citations, and you can read more about Wikipedia’s reliability here. However, for Positive Whiteness, Wikipedia serves as the entry point to the Trackers and Index’s that are cited on the website. The Index’s and Trackers can be easily web searched if the user wishes to not use Wikipedia.

With that said, Positive Whiteness aimed for further prudence by looking to have multiple Indexes and Trackers for various sections to make sure the ideas and perception we’re generating weren’t just based on one source but multiple sources. This is to further build confidence in the information and to make sure any controversy from one source didn’t distract from the overall idea.

What is a Country

Worldometers.info was used as the source to define what was considered a country and how many countries there were. Due to the sometimes complex nature of what is a country and what isn’t, this was the option determined to be optimal for the initial approach.

Name for a Country

The name used for the country was based on what the Tracker or Index used for that country. Some countries will have different names under different trackers and to remain neutral, the name of that country was not changed when inputted into the Positive Whiteness website.

Racial Terminology

The terms used to identify people were used in the way the countries classified their populations. Terms such as White, Mestizo, Mulatto, Indigenous, Black, Afro, Afro-Caribbean, Native American, Ladino, and such are strictly only used as the classification reports list them.

Numbers

Percentages will be exact to the decimal point but often will be rounded up or down for ease of reading and use.

Unique Countries & People

In this process, the line can blur and unique decisions can be made. The goal of Positive Whiteness, is to aim to include as opposed to exclude regardless of ideological or political concerns. That approach is a foundational thought process for Positive Whiteness and it applies unless there is a specific reason otherwise.

Unrecognized and Semi-Recognized countries

Kosovo

Kosovo is in Europe and demographic analysis by the Positive Whiteness terms would have them be classified as a White Majority Country. It’s currently recognized by 97 member states of the United Nations, out of 193, which means it is unrecognized by 96 countries. This makes for a difficult choice, trying to be an inclusionary organization.

What Positive Whiteness did was include Kosovo whenever it was listed in any Index, Survey or Tracker. But if Kosovo was not listed, it was not included. The goal here is to create a positive White culture and identity, not to engage in any political or ideological question. Thus Kosovo was included when the used documents included it, and not included in those documents that did not include it. When the list of the 195 countries was gathered, Kosovo was not counted as a country on this list.

Taiwan

The United Nations considers it part of the People’s Republic of China. However, the Indexes all have different approaches to it. Some list their countries as “Entities”, others “Country/Territory” and others just list it under country. Taking a neutral approach Taiwan was listed when the index listed it, and not listed when it didn’t.

Palestine State

The Palestine State was included on this page as the information was inputted from WorldoMeter’s datasheet. Terminology, reference and recognition of Palestine State were defined entirely within the scope of how the Index’s and Trackers recognized it. Taking a neutral approach Palestine was listed when the index listed it, and not listed when it didn’t.

Holy See

Holy See was included on this page as the information was inputted from WorldoMeter’s data sheet. Terminology, reference, and recognition of the Holy See were defined entirely within the scope of how the Index’s and Trackers recognized it. Taking a neutral approach, Holy See was listed when the index listed it, and not listed when it didn’t.

Special Circumstances countries

Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey

These countries all sit at cross-sections of Europe and Asia. They are considered European by many sources and aren’t part of the MENA country classification. Aiming to take an include and not exclude approach, they were considered part of Europe and thus classified as White Majority Countries.

Israel

Israel sits in a unique position when it comes to racial classification. The demographics of Israel show it to be 75% Jewish, 21% Arab, and 4% Other.  “About 44.9% percent of Israel’s Jewish population identify as either Mizrahi or Sephardi, 44.2% identify as Ashkenazi, about 3% as Beta Israel and 7.9% as mixed or other.”  Ashkenazi Jews are of European origin and considered by most governments to be classified as White, and polling by American Jews for example shows 92% of them consider themselves WhiteTaking the standard approach of only recognizing Ashkenazi Jews, with direct European origins, as White would make Israel not be a White Majority Country as they constitute approximately 30% of the country. Sephardic Jews historically hail from Portugal and Spain and would be classified as European and thus White. However concrete polling about their self-identity is scarce. Further, Mizrahi Jews originate from MENA countries yet Israel includes them in population counts together with Sephardic Jews and they jointly come out to approximately 45% of the population. A definitive population count breakdown between them does not exist to use as a reference. Further, the 21% Arab population would be classified as MENA, which sits at the cross-section of being classified as White by many governments but not self-identifying as White when given the option of a MENA classification. Aiming to take an include approach instead of exclude, Israel was counted as both a White Majority and MENA Majority country and counted towards the White Majority Country counts. It is listed as a White/MENA Majority country.

Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Colombia

These three countries in their internal demographic analysis list White and Mestizo together. A deeper analysis doesn’t give a clear indicator to how these are broken out so these countries are counted as White/Mestizo and included in the White Majority Country counts.
